James Dean Leavitt, has been practicing law in Las Vegas since 1992, after graduating from the University of Idaho College of Law. During law school, he competed and earned a coveted spot on the National Moot Court team, and worked as a law clerk at the United States Attorney’s office. Before opening his law practice in 1994, he clerked one year with Galatz, Earl, Catalano, and Smith, and worked one year as an attorney with Goodman and Chesnoff. At the time, these were the two preeminent personal injury and criminal defense firms in Las Vegas. The opportunity to work and learn from these nationally acclaimed firms, gave Mr. Leavitt invaluable knowledge, training, and experience. He uses his knowledge, training, and experience, when representing each of his clients.

Since opening his firm, he has successfully represented thousands of satisfied clients. During his lengthy career, Mr. Leavitt has diligently tried to develop respectful professional and personal relationships with prosecutors and judges. These relationships are vital when he negotiates a case with a prosecutor,or argues before the court. His knowledge, training, experience, and relationships, often make the difference in helping his clients avoid serving time in prison or jail.

Previously, in 1985, Mr. Leavitt earned a B.A. in Speech Communication Rhetoric from Brigham Young University, and subsequently taught public speaking at the Calgary Board of Education, the University of Idaho, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His specialized training in rhetoric, communications, and public speaking, has earned him a well deserved reputation as a powerful advocate in court. Rhetoric is the art of persuasion, and few attorneys have specialized knowledge or training in this subject. Understanding the theory of rhetoric, coupled with 25 years of practice, gives his clients a competitive advantage, each time he negotiates a case with a prosecutor or argues before the court.

Mr. Leavitt, was elected in 2004, and re-elected in 2010, to the Nevada Board of Regents. The Board of Regents approves budgets and sets policy for each one of Nevada’s eight public institutions.

His colleagues unanimously elected him to serve as Chairman of the Board, in 2009 and 2010. While Chairman, he was a fierce advocate for adequately funding Nevada higher education.

In 2013, Regent Leavitt, aided by many others, led the successful effort to establish and create the UNLV School of Medicine. In 2015, the Nevada legislature approved its funding. This remarkable achievement, coupled with his state-wide public service, has cemented his reputation as one of Nevada’s most recognizable higher education leaders.
